Tel Aviv, June 7: Israel on Sunday carried out airstrikes on what it described as Hezbollah terrorist headquarters in Beirut’s Dahieh district after the Iran-backed militant group allegedly fired rockets into Israeli territory, further intensifying tensions in the region.
According to a statement issued by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, the strikes were conducted on the directives of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz.
“In accordance with the directive of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have struck terrorist headquarters in the Dahieh district of Beirut in response to Hezbollah’s firing at Israeli territory,” the statement said.
The Israeli action drew strong reactions from Iran. Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Parliament’s National Security Commission, warned of a forceful response to the attack on Beirut’s southern suburb, a known Hezbollah stronghold.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Rezaei said Iran would deliver a “decisive and painful response” to the strike, further raising concerns about a broader regional escalation.
Meanwhile, violence also erupted in central Israel on Sunday, where at least one person was killed and several others injured in what authorities are investigating as a suspected terror attack.
According to Israel’s national emergency service, Magen David Adom (MDA), a man in his 30s was fatally shot at a gas station in Kochav Yair, a town located near the Green Line separating Israel from the occupied West Bank.
Five additional people were injured across multiple locations, including two who sustained serious injuries, MDA said.
Israeli police later located a vehicle believed to have been involved in the shooting and said the suspected attacker had been “neutralized.” Security officials identified the suspect as a Palestinian citizen of Israel from the Arab town of Tayibe.
The Palestinian militant group Hamas praised the attack, describing it as a response to Israel’s ongoing military operations in the Gaza Strip and actions in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
The latest developments come amid heightened regional tensions, with fears growing that the conflict could widen further as hostilities continue on multiple fronts.
