London, July 17: Andy Burnham has been elected leader of the UK’s governing Labour Party and is set to become the country’s 59th Prime Minister after Keir Starmer’s decision to resign last month.
The announcement was made by Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) Chair Shabana Mahmood during a special party conference in London. Mahmood said Burnham was the only eligible nominated Member of Parliament in the leadership contest and secured 379 nominations.
In his address after the announcement, Burnham outlined a five-point agenda focused on strengthening unity within the Labour Party, changing the tone of political debate, reaffirming Labour’s political identity, representing all regions of the United Kingdom, and advancing devolution by transferring more powers from Westminster to local authorities.
He said his leadership would prioritise ending internal divisions within the party and building what he described as “one Labour team.” Burnham also called for a different approach to politics, saying public confidence could be restored by focusing on practical solutions rather than political confrontation.
On policy direction, Burnham said Labour would maintain its own political identity while working with other parties where appropriate. He added that his leadership would serve people across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and pledged to pursue greater decentralisation by giving more powers to regional and local governments.
Following the announcement, the Labour Party congratulated Burnham in a post on X. Responding on the platform, Burnham described becoming party leader as “the honour of my life” and said his government would be guided by Labour’s priorities while working for every region and nation of the United Kingdom.
Burnham is expected to be invited by King Charles III to form a new government after Keir Starmer formally submits his resignation to the monarch.
