Ujjain, September 29: Heavy police deployment remained in place around the Shahi Masjid area in Ujjain on Tuesday following clashes between protesters and police during the removal of a portion of the mosque for a road-widening project.
Markets in the area remained closed amid the security arrangements. The clashes on Monday involved stone-pelting, following which police used tear gas and cane charges to disperse the crowd.
Police said 15 people were arrested in connection with the incident, while several security personnel were reported injured. Authorities have maintained security in the area and appealed to people to remain calm.
Police are also investigating the circulation of social-media content, including AI-generated videos that allegedly showed the entire mosque being demolished, while the road-widening work is set to continue.
