Chandigarh, September 30: Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, raising the issue of first-time voters who were allegedly turned away while seeking enrolment during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Punjab.
Warring said some young people who had turned 18 and applied for voter registration through Form 6 were asked to provide details establishing the electoral-roll status of their parents or grandparents from the previous intensive revision conducted more than two decades ago.
In his letter, Warring sought the Home Ministry’s clarification on the documents that would be accepted as proof of Indian citizenship by authorities, including the Election Commission. He also urged intervention to ensure that eligible first-time voters are able to seek inclusion in the electoral rolls.
