Massachusetts, June 20: Morocco midfielder Ismael Saibari scored the fastest goal of the FIFA World Cup 2026, finding the net just 70 seconds into Morocco’s Group-stage match against Scotland on Friday.
The goal surpassed the previous fastest strike of the tournament, scored by Czechia’s Michal Sadilek after five minutes and seven seconds against South Africa earlier in the competition.
Saibari’s early goal marked another milestone in his international career, making him only the second African player to score in each of his first two FIFA World Cup appearances, joining Egypt’s Mohamed Salah.
The strike also became Morocco’s fastest-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup and the second-fastest goal scored by an African nation in World Cup history. Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan continues to hold the record for the fastest World Cup goal by an African player, scored against the Czech Republic during the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Saibari’s effort now stands as the quickest goal of the ongoing tournament. However, the overall FIFA World Cup record remains with Turkey’s Hakan Sukur, who scored after just 11 seconds against South Korea during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Ahead of the match, former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia analysed the contest and the performances of both teams in the tournament so far.
Speaking on Morocco’s opening match against Brazil, Bhutia said Morocco produced the stronger performance and controlled key areas of the game, particularly in midfield.
He also noted the importance of Scotland’s victory over Haiti, saying the result could play a significant role in the group standings.
Discussing the tactical battle, Bhutia said Scotland would likely rely on organisation, physical play and aerial strength, while Morocco would focus on possession, quick passing and attacking movement.
Saibari’s record-breaking goal added another notable achievement to Morocco’s World Cup campaign as the team continued its push for a place in the knockout stage.
