Mumbai, July 2: Heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai on Thursday, affecting road traffic and disrupting daily life in many areas of the city.
Waterlogging was reported from Andheri, Kings Circle and Gandhi Market, where inundated roads slowed vehicular movement. Railway tracks at Dadar station were also submerged, impacting local train operations.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a nowcast red alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Raigad districts, forecasting moderate to intense rainfall at isolated places over the next three hours until 10:45 a.m.
The weather department advised residents to avoid low-lying and waterlogged areas, stay away from weak structures, trees and electric poles, and follow official weather updates.
According to IMD rainfall data recorded between 8 a.m. on July 1 and 7 a.m. on July 2, the eastern suburbs received the highest rainfall. Mithagar Municipal School in Mulund recorded 230.8 mm, followed by Mankhurd Fire Station with 228.6 mm and the S Ward Office with 227 mm.
Within the city, the F South Ward Office recorded 223.8 mm of rainfall, followed by the G South Ward Office with 208.2 mm and B Nadkarni Park Municipal School in Wadala with 206.2 mm.
In the western suburbs, SWM Santacruz Workshop recorded 223.4 mm of rainfall, followed by Nariyal Wadi School in Santacruz with 222.2 mm, Andheri Fire Station with 213.2 mm, K East Ward Office with 200.8 mm and K West Ward Office with 200.6 mm.
Senior IMD scientist Naresh Yadav said the southwest monsoon is expected to advance into additional parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh and the west coast of Gujarat in the coming days.
He said extremely heavy rainfall is likely over the Konkan region, Goa and south Gujarat during the next four to five days, for which a red alert has been issued. Very heavy rainfall is also expected over Odisha and parts of central India.
