New Delhi, July 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu after she won the gold medal in the women’s 48kg event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow, securing India’s first gold medal of the tournament.
Chanu claimed her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal after finishing on top in the women’s 48kg category. Earlier in the day, fellow Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh won the silver medal in the men’s 60kg event.In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi praised Chanu’s consistency and congratulated her on adding another Commonwealth Games medal to her career.”Another glorious chapter in Indian Weightlifting!

In the clean and jerk section, she failed in her opening attempt at 82kg but cleared the weight in her second attempt.
She then lifted 85kg in her third attempt, setting a new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth record.Chanu later completed a successful lift of 105kg to confirm the gold medal and become the first Indian weightlifter to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals.
The victory adds to her previous Commonwealth Games gold medals won in 2018 and 2022 and gives India its first gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
