Washington, August 1: US President Donald Trump on Friday said he was “losing faith” in Iran, alleging that Tehran has repeatedly failed to honour its commitments even as diplomatic engagement between the two countries continues.
Speaking during a televised Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump questioned Iran’s credibility, accusing its leadership of frequently breaking promises made during negotiations.”They do lie, and they do misrepresent,” Trump said. “They always want to talk, but they break their word so often.
“Despite his criticism, Trump said senior US officials remain engaged in talks with Iranian representatives. He said the US negotiating team includes Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“We have great people talking,” Trump said.Referring to regional security concerns, Trump cited an attack on a US military base in Jordan, saying it took place while diplomatic discussions were underway.
“Instead, I got a call from Pete that they just shot five missiles at one of our bases in Jordan,” Trump said, referring to US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
When asked whether further attacks could occur, Trump said he could not rule out the possibility.”I think I’m going to be foolish to say no. You always have to keep your guard up,” he said.
Commenting on Iran’s capabilities, Trump said the country could regain strength temporarily but would weaken over time.”They get weaker. They get a little stronger, maybe now, but they’ll get weaker, and then they peter out,” he said.
Trump’s remarks come as Washington and Tehran continue diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader regional security issues.
