Tehran, September 21: Iran has ruled out reopening the Strait of Hormuz or returning to the previous framework of negotiations with the United States until Washington meets conditions set by Tehran, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Monday.
Ghalibaf said Iran had conveyed its demands to the United States through intermediaries and would not reconsider its position until those conditions were met.“Our messages and conditions have been conveyed explicitly to the other side through intermediaries,” Ghalibaf said, adding that there would be no return to the previous negotiation framework or reopening of the Strait of Hormuz until Iran’s rights are recognised and the United States fulfils its commitments, according to Al Jazeera.
The Strait of Hormuz has become a key point of tension between Iran and the United States. The waterway is a major route for global energy shipments, and restrictions on maritime traffic have raised concerns about disruptions to oil supplies and international trade.
Ghalibaf’s remarks came after Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned that any renewed US military action against Iran would be followed by attacks on American bases and interests in the region.
According to a statement carried by Iran’s state-run IRNA, the military command said any US action against Iran would result in attacks on American bases and interests in the region. It also warned regional countries against supporting any US military operation against Tehran.
Meanwhile, US Central Command said its forces had redirected 109 commercial vessels as part of efforts to enforce Washington’s naval blockade on Iran. CENTCOM said the vessels were redirected as of September 20 to ensure compliance with the blockade.
The United States resumed enforcement of the blockade against maritime traffic entering and leaving Iranian ports on July 14.
US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of consequences if Tehran does not change its position, while also indicating that he could be open to talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei had earlier said Tehran had conveyed conditions for ending the conflict through Qatari mediation. These included an end to hostilities on all fronts, the release of frozen Iranian funds and an end to the naval blockade.
The developments come as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly, where the US-Iran confrontation and wider tensions in West Asia are expected to remain among the issues under discussion.
