Chandigarh, October 3: The Congress has appointed Jalandhar Cantonment MLA and former Indian hockey captain Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), replacing Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.

The appointment came after Warring resigned as the Punjab Congress president and met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi. Warring had been heading the state Congress unit since April 2022

.Pargat Singh, a three-time MLA from Jalandhar Cantonment, first won the seat in 2012 and retained it in the 2017 and 2022 Assembly elections. He joined the Congress in 2016 after beginning his political career with the Shiromani Akali Dal.

Before entering politics, Singh represented India in international hockey and captained the national team at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He later served as Punjab’s sports director and was a Cabinet minister in the Charanjit Singh Channi-led government from September 2021 to March 2022.

His appointment comes ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The change in the state party leadership follows consultations by Congress’s Punjab affairs in-charge Sachin Pilot with senior party leaders.

As the new PPCC president, Singh will lead the state party organisation and coordinate its preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.
