New Delhi, June 26: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating drug abuse and protecting the youth from the menace of narcotics on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

In a post on X, Shah said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking by targeting narcotics networks and providing support and rehabilitation to individuals affected by substance abuse.

He said the government remains committed to protecting the younger generation from drugs and strengthening the objective of a drug-free India.

Later in the day, the Home Minister is scheduled to chair the 10th apex-level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD) and release the “Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029).”The meeting, organised by the Narcotics Control Bureau, will be attended by representatives of 44 Central Ministries and Departments and 108 representatives from state governments and law enforcement agencies through a hybrid mode.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the vision document has been prepared after consultations with central agencies, state governments and other stakeholders. It outlines a roadmap to address demand reduction, supply reduction and harm reduction related to narcotics.

The document also proposes measures to tackle synthetic drugs, darknet-enabled trafficking, expand treatment and rehabilitation facilities, and strengthen efforts to prevent drug abuse among youth over the next three years.

The ministry said the document would serve as a framework for policy formulation, implementation and institutional strengthening to curb drug trafficking and substance abuse across the country.

As part of the drug disposal fortnight campaign, various central and state law enforcement agencies are expected to destroy approximately 2,09,500 kilograms of seized narcotic substances valued at around Rs 6,000 crore in accordance with legal procedures.
