Guwahati, August 27: Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Silchar, seized 5.6 lakh Yaba tablets valued at approximately Rs 168 crore during a joint operation in Cachar district, officials said on Thursday.
The operation was conducted during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday at Jujhang Pahar in Lakhipur. The joint team recovered 5,60,000 Yaba tablets weighing around 60 kg and apprehended one person.
A truck allegedly used to transport the contraband was also seized.
According to Assam Rifles, the consignment is suspected to have originated in Manipur and was being transported towards Assam through National Highway-37. The seized narcotics and the apprehended person were handed over to the concerned authorities for further legal action.
In a separate operation earlier, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Guwahati, seized 1.168 kg of suspected heroin, valued at Rs 2.33 crore, from the DN Kamrup Express at Guwahati railway station.
The joint team intercepted two passengers travelling in Coach A-2 on Berths 17 and 18 during checking. Four packets containing suspected heroin, also known as brown sugar, were found concealed in their baggage.
The two passengers were identified as Azabur Rahman, 22, and Sahajahan Ali, 18. The four packets weighed 292 grams, 289 grams, 310 grams and 277 grams, respectively, totalling 1.168 kg.
Further investigation into both cases is underway.
