Tehran [Iran], May 28:Iran’s elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched early-morning strikes on an American base following what it described as a pre-dawn US attack on the outskirts of Bandar Abbas Airport, according to Tasnim News Agency.
In a statement carried by the Iranian outlet, the IRGC said aerial projectiles fired by the “invading American army” prompted retaliatory action at 4:50 a.m., targeting the base allegedly responsible for the strike. The statement did not disclose the name of the American installation or further operational details.
The confrontation marks a sharp escalation after reports earlier on Thursday of an armed exchange between Iranian and US forces near the Strait of Hormuz. According to Tasnim, an “informed military source” said the IRGC Navy fired upon a US tanker that had “attempted to pass through the Strait by switching off its radar system.” US forces reportedly responded by firing at a scorched area near Bandar Abbas, with no casualties or property damage reported.
In a separate account, Tasnim stated that Iranian naval forces intercepted four vessels attempting to cross the Strait and enter the Gulf “without coordination with Iranian authorities.” After multiple warnings were allegedly ignored, Iranian forces fired warning shots, compelling the ships to withdraw.
Meanwhile, CBS News reported that the US military conducted additional strikes on Wednesday, describing the actions as “defensive” and aimed at maintaining a fragile ceasefire framework between Washington and Tehran. According to a US official cited by CBS, American forces shot down four Iranian drones and targeted a ground control station in Bandar Abbas preparing to launch another drone. The drones were described as posing a threat near the Strait of Hormuz.“These actions were measured, purely defensive, and intended to maintain the ceasefire,” the official said, adding that the truce was still considered intact despite the heightened tensions.
Separately, former US President Donald Trump reiterated his commitment to securing a favourable ceasefire arrangement with Iran, asserting that he “won’t be outlasted” and insisting that Tehran must never acquire nuclear weapons. Addressing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Trump said the waterway would remain “open to everybody” as part of ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
