New Delhi, June 27: An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan on Saturday evening, with tremors felt across several parts of northern India, including Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and other adjoining regions.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 7:04 pm IST. The epicentre was located in Afghanistan at latitude 36.442°N and longitude 70.672°E, at a depth of 215 kilometres.

In a post on X, the NCS stated, “EQ of M: 6.2, On: 27/06/2026 19:04:51 IST, Lat: 36.442 N, Long: 70.672 E, Depth: 215 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake was centred approximately 43 kilometres south of Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage were received from the affected areas in Afghanistan. The country remains vulnerable to earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush region, which experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location at the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates and the presence of several active fault lines.

The earthquake occurred amid increased seismic activity in the region. Since Friday, at least five earthquakes ranging between 4.3 and 5.3 magnitude have been reported in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The tremors reportedly caused injuries to several people and damaged houses in areas including Barkhan, Musakhail, Kohlu, Kingri, and Rakhni.

Meanwhile, a separate earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale was reported off the coast of Aragua in Venezuela on Saturday. The tremor came days after two major earthquakes struck the South American country.

According to official figures, the death toll from the twin earthquakes in Venezuela has reached 920, while more than 3,300 people have been injured. Rescue operations are continuing in affected areas, with authorities reporting that over 170 people remain missing beneath collapsed structures.

International rescue teams and humanitarian agencies have been deployed to assist relief efforts in the affected regions.
