New Delhi, May 13: In a major austerity and sustainability initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reportedly directed the Special Protection Group (SPG) to reduce the size of his official convoy by 50 percent, sources said on Tuesday.

The move is aimed at promoting responsible fuel consumption and reducing government expenditure at a time of rising global crude oil prices and growing economic uncertainty linked to the ongoing West Asia crisis.

According to sources, the Prime Minister has also encouraged increased use of electric vehicles (EVs) within the convoy, while making it clear that no new vehicles should be purchased for the transition. Existing resources, officials said, will be optimally utilised to support the green initiative. The decision is being viewed as a symbolic yet significant message from the country’s top leadership on energy conservation and fiscal discipline.

Sources added that Modi has urged both citizens and government departments to adopt cost-cutting measures and avoid unnecessary fuel consumption. The initiative aligns with the government’s broader push towards sustainable mobility and energy efficiency, while reinforcing calls for environmental responsibility amid global economic challenges.
