Washington, October 2: Tensions between the United States and Iran remain high after President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal aimed at ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

The proposal was conveyed through mediators as diplomatic efforts continued to find a way out of the ongoing conflict. Trump has said that renewed or intensified US military action against Iran after the November 3 midterm elections remains possible.

Iran, meanwhile, has indicated that it is preparing a stronger response if the United States launches further attacks, while diplomatic contacts through mediators continue. The United States is also increasing its military presence in the Middle East.

About 9,000 additional US troops and a third aircraft carrier are being deployed to the region, with the move coming amid continued tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and concerns about disruptions to global energy supplies.
