New Delhi: India has expanded its defence exports by delivering its indigenous Akash surface-to-air missile system to Armenia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, marking a major step forward in the country’s defence manufacturing sector.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Akash missile system is a medium-range air defence platform capable of tracking and destroying multiple aerial threats within a range of around 25 kilometres.India’s Defence Secretary said the cost-effective and combat-proven missile system is attracting strong interest from other countries.

The deliveries highlight India’s growing role in the global defence market and its efforts to promote locally manufactured military equipment. The development is also in line with India’s ambitious target of achieving ₹50,000 crore in defence exports by 2030, as the country continues to strengthen its position as a major defence equipment supplier in the international market.

The Akash missile system is an important part of India’s Make in India initiative, aimed at boosting domestic defence production, reducing dependence on imports and expanding military exports.
