New Delhi, May 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday began his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat by celebrating India’s recent achievements in athletics, particularly the remarkable performances witnessed at the 29th National Senior Athletics Federation Competition held in Ranchi.
Highlighting the rapid progress of Indian sprinting, the Prime Minister noted that the national record in the men’s 100-metre event was broken three times within a span of two days, describing it as a significant milestone for Indian athletics.
During the programme, PM Modi interacted with star sprinters Gurindervir Singh and Animesh Kujur, who shared insights into their training routines, friendship and competitive spirit. Speaking during the interaction, Gurindervir said that while he and Animesh support and motivate each other during practice sessions, they become fierce competitors once they step onto the track.
Gurindervir, who serves in the Indian Navy, recently created history by becoming the fastest Indian sprinter after clocking 10.09 seconds in the men’s 100-metre final. His performance not only shattered the national record but also made him the first Indian athlete to breach the 10.10-second barrier in the prestigious event.
Recalling his childhood, Gurindervir shared a personal anecdote, saying that when his mother discouraged him from watching television and urged him to focus on studies, he had promised her that one day she would watch him on television. He expressed happiness that his achievements have now made that dream a reality.
The 25-year-old’s record-breaking run came after a dramatic sequence of events in Ranchi. Gurindervir had earlier set a national record of 10.17 seconds in the semifinals, only to see fellow sprinter Animesh Kujur surpass it moments later with a timing of 10.15 seconds. However, Gurindervir reclaimed the record in the final with his historic 10.09-second finish.
Both athletes secured qualification for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as well as the Asian Games, marking a major achievement for Indian athletics.Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated Gurindervir Singh on his historic feat, praising his achievement and stating that the entire nation was proud of his record-breaking performance.
The Prime Minister’s recognition of the athletes during Mann Ki Baat reflects the growing prominence of athletics in India and the country’s emergence as a rising force in international track and field competitions.
