Kyiv, July 6: At least seven people were killed and more than two dozen injured after Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, early Monday, officials said. The attack came just a day before the NATO summit in Türkiye, where the war in Ukraine is expected to be a major topic of discussion.
The overnight strikes hit several residential buildings across the city, causing fires, heavy damage, and partial building collapses. Rescue teams rushed to the affected areas as many residents were forced to take shelter in underground metro stations during the attack. Authorities said emergency operations were continuing amid fears that more people could be trapped under the rubble.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy again appealed to Western allies for stronger air defence support, saying continued Russian attacks highlight the urgent need for additional missile defence systems. The latest assault follows another deadly strike on Kyiv last week that caused significant civilian casualties.
The fresh attack is expected to add pressure on NATO leaders meeting in Türkiye, where the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and regional security will be among the key issues on the agenda.
