Washington DC, June 16: US President Donald Trump on Monday said Iran has agreed not to develop or possess nuclear weapons under a new agreement between the United States and Iran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had agreed to never have a nuclear weapon. He also denied reports claiming that the United States would provide USD 300 million to Iran, calling the reports false.

The statement comes after the United States and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that sets out a framework for future relations between the two countries. Under the agreement, any sanctions relief for Iran will depend on its compliance with nuclear inspections and other commitments.

US Vice President JD Vance said the agreement is aimed at ensuring that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons. He added that any sanctions relief would depend on Iran taking verifiable steps regarding its nuclear programme and allowing inspections.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said Iran would not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons, regardless of any agreement.According to US administration officials, the agreement links economic engagement and sanctions relief to Iran’s cooperation on nuclear verification measures and its commitments under the deal.

The agreement is expected to be formally signed in Geneva later this week, with Switzerland facilitating the process. The full text of the agreement is expected to be released after the signing ceremony.
