WASHINGTON, Sept 8: US President Donald Trump has claimed that oil prices could fall below $2 a gallon after the United States achieves victory in its conflict with Iran.
In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump linked energy prices to the ongoing military operations in the Middle East and said markets would stabilise after the conflict.“Oil prices will drop precipitously, like everything else is dropping (but more!), when we WIN the war with Iran,” Trump wrote. “Three Dollars a gallon, but ultimately, below Two Dollars a gallon.”
Trump also reiterated that the United States would not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.“It will all happen quickly, and Iran will never have a Nuclear Weapon. MAGA!” he added.
Earlier on Monday, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned Washington against attacks on Iran’s energy facilities. In a post on X, Ghalibaf said Iran’s oil and gas production chain was exposed and warned that attacks on Iranian assets would lead to retaliation against US interests in the region.“Strike our assets, and you get struck. We’ve already proven it,” he wrote.
Ghalibaf made the remarks while resharing a post by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who said Iran’s oil tanker fleet was vulnerable and warned that US forces could target the vessels if Iran attacked American ships.
Hegseth wrote that US aircraft, ships and submarines could strike Iranian oil tankers in the areas covered by US Central Command and US Indo-Pacific Command.
He also shared a video from US Central Command showing strikes on tankers. CENTCOM said the three Iranian crude oil tankers targeted were part of a network that generated funds for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its regional allies.
Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of CENTCOM, said the United States would respond to attacks on its forces and could target Iran’s oil fleet.
The exchange comes amid continued threats between Washington and Tehran over military operations, energy infrastructure and Iran’s nuclear programme.
