Dallas, September 10: US President Donald Trump has promised to issue a $5,000 dividend to every adult citizen in the United States if Republicans win control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections.
Trump made the announcement while delivering the keynote address at the 2026 Republican Convention on Wednesday. He said the US economy had grown under his administration and claimed the government was generating enough revenue to support the proposed payment.
“If Republicans win both the House and the Senate, because of our tremendous economic success and strength, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States for $5,000,” Trump said.
The proposed payment adds to several financial measures announced by the Trump administration.
In July, Trump launched the “Trump Accounts” programme, under which children born in the United States between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028, are eligible for an initial $1,000 government contribution. Parents may also contribute up to $5,000 annually under the programme.
In 2025, Trump announced a one-time, tax-free payment of $1,776, referred to as the “Warrior Dividend”, for about 1.45 million US military service members. However, Trump did not provide details on how the proposed $5,000 dividend would be funded or distributed. CNN reported that a payment of $5,000 to an estimated 270 million adults could cost about $1.35 trillion.
Trump had previously proposed $2,000 tariff rebate payments for most Americans. His Treasury Secretary had said legislation would be required to authorise such payments.
The latest announcement comes as the administration seeks to address concerns over the cost of living and economic conditions ahead of the midterm elections.
