Bandipora, May 13:Former Minister and Ex-MLA Bandipora Usman Majid has strongly criticised the Jammu and Kashmir government and successive political administrations over the continued suffering of displaced families from Kanyari village in the Niadkhai area of Bandipora district.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Majid alleged that the affected families have been living in miserable conditions since 2014 despite repeated promises of rehabilitation from different governments. He said the villagers have been “abandoned to darkness, poverty, and humiliation” for more than a decade.
According to Majid, the displaced families are still living in temporary shelters without basic facilities such as drinking water, electricity, healthcare, roads, and proper housing. He termed the situation a “humanitarian failure” and accused successive governments of making only false promises without taking practical steps on the ground.
He also expressed concern that the families are allegedly not being allowed to construct permanent homes at their present location. Majid questioned why the government has failed to either rehabilitate the families elsewhere or permit them to build proper houses after twelve years of displacement.
Calling the condition of the villagers “deeply painful,” Majid said the people of Kanyari were being treated like “forgotten citizens” whose suffering has been ignored by those in power. The former minister urged the Jammu and Kashmir administration to immediately intervene and provide permanent rehabilitation along with all basic facilities or officially allow the affected families to construct homes where they are currently residing.
Majid warned that continued neglect of the displaced villagers would remain a lasting stain on the record of successive governments and political setups in the Union Territory.
