Ramban, May 30: Two persons were killed after a truck plunged into a deep gorge and caught fire along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) near Gangroo in the Ramsoo area of Ramban district on Saturday, officials said.

According to initial reports, the truck was travelling from Jammu towards Srinagar when the driver lost control on a sharp, mountainous stretch. The vehicle skidded off the road, tumbled into the gorge, and burst into flames moments later.

Rescue teams from the local police, fire services, and volunteers immediately launched an operation. Once the blaze was extinguished, two charred bodies were recovered from the wreckage. Officials believe the deceased are the truck’s driver and cleaner, though their identities are yet to be confirmed.

Police have registered a case and begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The tragic incident has revived concerns over road safety on the vulnerable Ramban stretch of NH-44, which has long been prone to accidents due to sharp curves, narrow passages, and challenging terrain.
