Doha, Qatar, June 15: World leaders on Monday welcomed the peace agreement announced between the United States and Iran, describing it as a significant diplomatic development that could help reduce tensions in West Asia, reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and support economic stability affected by months of regional conflict.
The agreement, announced by US President Donald Trump and facilitated through mediation efforts involving Pakistan and other regional partners, received support from Qatar, Turkiye, the United Kingdom, Germany and France. Leaders urged all parties to implement the understanding and continue engagement through dialogue.
Qatar Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani welcomed the agreement and acknowledged the role of regional and international stakeholders in advancing the negotiations. In a statement, Qatarās Ministry of Foreign Affairs termed the memorandum an important step towards peace and economic cooperation and commended the efforts of Pakistan and other mediators.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also welcomed the development, expressing hope that it would contribute to peace and security in the region. He thanked Pakistan, Qatar and Saudi Arabia for supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the agreement as an important step towards ending hostilities, ensuring regional stability and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He congratulated the mediators involved and stressed the need for full implementation of the memorandum. Starmer also reiterated the United Kingdomās position that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons and said Britain was prepared to assist in technical negotiations and maritime security efforts.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the agreement, stating that it could contribute to economic recovery and improved security across the Middle East. He described the development as a diplomatic achievement with international significance.
French President Emmanuel Macron called for the swift implementation of the agreement and emphasised the importance of restoring unrestricted navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He said France and the United Kingdom were prepared to support international efforts aimed at resuming maritime traffic and addressing wider regional security concerns.
The international response followed President Trump’s announcement that the agreement between Washington and Tehran had been completed. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the deal was finalised and expressed optimism about the resumption of global oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose government played a mediation role in the negotiations, said both sides had agreed to permanently end military operations and move forward with a peace framework. He thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye for their support during the diplomatic process.
Sharif said the formal signing ceremony is scheduled to take place in Switzerland on June 19. According to him, mediators will oversee a series of pre-implementation meetings before the signing to facilitate technical discussions and prepare for the execution of the agreement.
The deal is expected to be formally signed later this week and is being viewed as an opportunity to reduce regional tensions, restore trade routes and support long-term peace and stability in West Asia.
