Washington, June 15: United States President Donald Trump on Monday announced the completion of a peace agreement between the United States and Iran, authorising the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of the US naval blockade in the strategic waterway.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the agreement with Iran had been finalised and authorised the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping.
“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all. I hereby fully authorise the toll-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz and authorise the immediate removal of the United States naval blockade. Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow,” Trump wrote.
The announcement comes amid diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia and follows negotiations in which Pakistan played a mediating role.
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that a peace agreement had been reached after extensive talks between the two countries. He said both sides had agreed to the immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including in Lebanon.
According to Sharif, the agreement is scheduled to be formally signed on June 19 in Switzerland.
In a statement posted on X, Sharif thanked the United States and Iran for pursuing a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. He also acknowledged the contributions of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye in facilitating the negotiations.
Sharif said mediators would hold a series of pre-implementation meetings this week to prepare for technical discussions and the formal signing of the agreement.
Earlier, Trump had indicated that the agreement remained on course despite renewed tensions following Israeli airstrikes in Beirut and warnings of retaliation from Iran.
Speaking to Axios, Trump said the signing process had been delayed by several hours due to developments in Lebanon. He expressed concern that the Israeli operation had complicated ongoing diplomatic efforts.
According to Axios, the Beirut strike occurred shortly before the United States and Iran were expected to finalise the agreement. Trump was also reported to have expressed dissatisfaction over the timing of the operation.
The US President said the agreement would include measures aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and would establish mechanisms for oversight of Tehran’s nuclear programme, including inspections and the handling of nuclear material.
While Trump and Sharif have announced that an agreement has been reached, Iranian authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the deal.
The agreement is being viewed as a step towards ending the conflict that began on February 28 following US and Israeli strikes in Iran and subsequent military escalation across the region.
