Bandipora, Aug. 6: The Social Welfare Department Bandipora on Thursday organised an awareness programme on the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) to promote awareness about the legal rights, protection and welfare of senior citizens.

The programme was attended by senior citizens, local residents, departmental officials and other stakeholders. Participants were informed about the key provisions of the Act, which aims to safeguard the dignity, maintenance, safety and well-being of elderly parents and senior citizens.

Officials explained that the Act places a legal obligation on children and legal heirs to provide maintenance and care to their parents and elderly family members. They also briefed participants about welfare schemes and support services available under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana, including initiatives related to awareness, healthcare and social security for senior citizens.

During the interactive session, speakers emphasised the need for families and communities to ensure the care and support of elderly persons. Citizens were encouraged to report cases of neglect, abuse or abandonment of senior citizens so that action could be taken under the relevant provisions of the Act.

The programme concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to spreading awareness about the rights of senior citizens and supporting efforts to promote their welfare and protection.
