Srinagar, August 22: Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Saturday criticised the National Conference-led government over the reported 6.83 per cent increase in electricity tariffs, saying the decision was contrary to the party’s election promise of providing 200 units of free electricity to every household.

Sharma said nearly two years after the 2024 Assembly elections, the promised free electricity scheme had not been implemented, while consumers were now facing higher power bills. He said the proposed tariff hike, scheduled to come into effect from September 1, would add to the financial burden on households amid rising living costs.

Questioning the Omar Abdullah-led government over the status of the promised 200 units of free electricity, Sharma sought an explanation from the government on the commitment made during the elections.

He said the BJP would continue to raise issues concerning consumers and seek accountability from the government on its election promises.
