Beirut, August 22: Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Friday discussed the continuation of Israeli strikes in Lebanon and called for the implementation of a framework agreement reached during Lebanon-US-Israel negotiations in Washington, Al Jazeera reported.
According to a statement from the Lebanese Presidency, the two leaders stressed the need to pressure Israel to comply with the agreement. Aoun thanked Meloni for Italy’s role in hosting the tripartite negotiations and for its efforts to support security and stability in southern Lebanon.
The talks took place amid continued tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, with Lebanese authorities reporting casualties from Israeli attacks.
Lebanon’s Ministry of Health said at least 4,348 people had been killed in Israeli attacks since March 2, while more than 12,300 had been injured. Since the start of the current conflict on October 8, 2023, the ministry has reported at least 8,915 deaths and more than 30,540 injuries.
Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes carried out two strikes in southern Lebanon, targeting the Ali al-Taher ridge in Nabatieh province, overlooking southern Lebanon and northern Israel, Lebanon’s official National News Agency reported.
The agency also reported strikes near Deir Siryan, Doha Kafr Rumman and the al-Mansouri area in southern Lebanon.
