Guwahati, August 12: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain said she was happy to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi after winning a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and said his personal interaction and encouragement motivate athletes.

Borgohain met Modi at his residence on Monday during an interaction with Indian medal winners from the Commonwealth Games. Speaking to news agency, she said it was her sixth meeting with the Prime Minister and that she had also met him during the Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

She said athletes of earlier generations did not have similar opportunities to interact with the Prime Minister, adding that Modi speaks to athletes about their performances and experiences.

Borgohain also said Modi praised her for objecting to a distorted map of India displayed at a restaurant in Glasgow. She said the Prime Minister also acknowledged her visit to flood-affected areas of Assam after returning from the Commonwealth Games.

Borgohain visited flood-affected people in Golaghat on August 8 and spoke about the impact of the floods. She said she had followed updates about the situation while competing in Glasgow and tried to contribute to relief efforts from there.

The boxer said the response from the government and people helping those affected was encouraging, but noted that flood victims would have to rebuild their lives after the situation improves. She expressed hope that the crisis would end soon.

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Borgohain won a silver medal in the women’s 75kg boxing event. She lost the final to Australia’s Emma-Sue Greentree.
