Mumbai, June 24: Heavy rainfall continued across Mumbai overnight, causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas and disrupting road traffic in parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai and adjoining districts, warning of moderate to intense spells of rain.
The alert covered Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg, advising residents to exercise caution during the period of intense rainfall. According to the IMD’s broader forecast, Mumbai, its suburbs and Palghar remain under a red alert, while Thane is under an orange alert and Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg are under a yellow alert.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that the nowcast warning remained in effect until 10 a.m. as intermittent heavy showers continued across the city and suburban areas, accompanied by cloudy conditions and the possibility of thunderstorms.
Despite the adverse weather conditions, suburban railway services continued to operate normally. Western Railway confirmed that services on major routes, including the Harbour Line and the Churchgate-Dahanu corridor, remained unaffected during the morning peak hours.
However, continuous rainfall during the night led to waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. The Andheri subway was closed to vehicular traffic after it was inundated, making the underpass unsafe for commuters.
According to BMC rainfall records, the city received an average of 56 mm of rainfall between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m. on June 23. The eastern suburbs recorded 23 mm, while the western suburbs received 33 mm.Several locations in the western suburbs reported significant rainfall between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Charkop Sector 1 Municipal School in Kandivali recorded 32 mm of rainfall, followed by MHB Municipal School in Malad with 28 mm, Gajdharbandh Storm Water Pumping Station with 26 mm, and both Banana Leaf and Juhu Dispensary with 22 mm. Nariyalwadi School in Santacruz recorded 21 mm during the same period.
The BMC stated that all other subways in the city remained operational, while railway services continued without major disruption.
BMC officials said civic teams remained stationed at the Andheri subway to prevent vehicles from entering the flooded underpass. Officials reported that a rickshaw became stranded in the submerged section of the subway and was later rescued by municipal personnel.
Residents in affected areas also raised concerns over blocked drainage systems, stating that clogged manholes had contributed to water accumulation and created difficulties for daily commuters, including students.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as forecasts indicate that rainfall activity is likely to persist along the west coast over the coming days.
