New Delhi, May 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief over the loss of lives in a coal mine explosion in China’s Shanxi Province, extending condolences to President Xi Jinping and the people of China.

At least 90 miners were killed after a gas explosion ripped through a coal mine in Changzhi city late Friday, according to Chinese state media. More than 200 miners have reportedly been rescued, while rescue and relief operations continue.“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives in the coal mine accident in China’s Shanxi Province.

My heartfelt condolences to President Xi Jinping, the bereaved families and the people of China,” Modi said in a message.Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.

President Xi Jinping has directed officials to intensify rescue efforts and ensure strict enforcement of industrial safety measures.The disaster is being described as one of the deadliest mining accidents in China in recent years.
