Moscow, Russia | May 17:Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to China from May 19 to 20 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to an announcement on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s official Telegram channel. The visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness, Friendship and Cooperation, a key document shaping bilateral ties between the two nations.
According to the ministry, both leaders will hold high-level talks to review major issues on the bilateral agenda and explore pathways to further deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership. They will also exchange views on significant international and regional developments.
A major highlight of the visit will be the official opening ceremony of the Years of Education of Russia and China 2026–2027. Following their talks, Putin and Xi are expected to sign a joint statement along with several intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements aimed at expanding cooperation.
The programme includes a meeting between Putin and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, during which both sides will discuss future prospects for trade and economic collaboration.
On Thursday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that preparations for the visit were nearly complete.“Preparations are already complete; we are putting the final touches. It will take place very soon,” he told reporters, as quoted by Russian news agency TASS.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, US President Donald Trump, who is currently on a visit to China, indicated that President Xi is expected to travel to the United States around September 24. Trump described the planned visit as “reciprocal,” likening it to reciprocal trade practices between the two countries.
Speaking alongside Xi at the Zhongnanhai leadership compound in Beijing, Trump expressed gratitude toward the Chinese leadership.“We’ve become friendly with all of them; they’re great people. It’s an honour to be here… I believe President Xi will be coming to the United States around September 24, and the visit will be reciprocal,” he said.
Trump concluded his two-day state visit on Friday, marking the end of a series of high-stakes meetings aimed at stabilising and strengthening ties between Washington and Beijing.
