Kharagpur, West Bengal | May 17:West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh on Sunday issued a strong warning against illegal constructions and encroachments across the country, asserting that bulldozers would be deployed wherever unlawful structures are found.
Speaking to reporters in Kharagpur, Ghosh said the newly formed state government had begun action against illegal constructions from its first day in office.“Bulldozers will roll across the entire country. Wherever there is illegal construction, bulldozers will be deployed. I appeal to those involved in illegal activities to operate within the law. The government will support legal work but will not tolerate encroachments on government land,” he said.
The remarks came amid ongoing demolition drives in Kolkata’s Tiljala area following a devastating fire that claimed two lives and raised concerns over alleged unauthorised structures.
Earlier, West Bengal Minister Agnimitra Paul defended the demolition process, emphasising that due procedure would be followed before any action.“If there is illegal construction, we will send notice and seek documents. If papers are not provided, we cannot allow such structures. A time limit will be given; we are not in a hurry,” she told to ANI.
BJP leader Rudranil Ghosh also backed the demolition campaign, alleging that the previous Trinamool Congress government failed to curb illegal construction.“The demolished structures were illegal. This should have been done under Mamata Banerjee. They protected the offenders instead of taking action. A bulldozer is not a symbol; it ensures quick results,” he said.
Meanwhile, several residents affected by the demolition questioned the administration’s approach, requesting more time to retrieve documents from the razed buildings.
Resident Shakeel Ahmad claimed essential papers remained locked inside, while Nazia Firdous appealed to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to grant a 24-hour stay to allow residents to present ownership documents.
The demolition drive is expected to continue as authorities intensify scrutiny of unauthorised structures across the region.
