latest NewsCentre Raises Export Duty on Diesel and ATF; Domestic Fuel Duties Unchanged

New Delhi, June 16: The Central Government has increased the export duty on diesel by Rs 14 per litre and on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) by Rs 12.5 per litre, while keeping duties on petrol exports and fuels meant for domestic consumption unchanged.

According to a notification issued by the Department of Revenue, the revised duty rates will come into effect from Tuesday. The export duty on diesel will be Rs 14 per litre, while ATF exports will attract a duty of Rs 12.5 per litre.

There is no change in the duty on petrol exports or in the existing excise duty rates on petrol and diesel supplied for domestic use.

The export levies, including Special Additional Excise Duty (SAED) and Road and Infrastructure Cess (RIC), were introduced on March 27 to ensure adequate domestic availability of petroleum products amid concerns arising from the West Asia situation.

The government reviews these rates every fortnight based on average international prices of crude oil, petrol, diesel and ATF. The previous revision came into effect on June 1.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said the country has sufficient supplies of petrol, diesel, LPG and natural gas.

Addressing an inter-ministerial press briefing, Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma said fuel supplies remain stable and refineries are operating at optimum capacity with adequate crude oil inventories.

She urged industrial and commercial consumers to procure diesel through their consumer pumps to reduce pressure on retail fuel outlets.

According to the ministry, around 42 crore litres of diesel that were previously supplied through bulk or consumer pumps shifted to retail outlets in May, leading to increased demand at some locations.

To manage the situation, the government issued a notification on June 11 limiting retail diesel sales to 200 litres per person per day. Industrial and commercial consumers have been directed to obtain diesel through their designated consumer pumps.

Sharma said the measure is temporary and is expected to remain in place for about 90 days. She reiterated that there is no shortage of petrol or diesel in the country.
